The first meeting of the official schedule with representatives of the town and the management of Tatry mountain resorts, a.s. (TMR) took place at the seat of the honorary consul in the regional house in Liptovský Mikuláš. It was a crucial moment for the Polish diplomacy and the joint candidacy, preparation and presentation of the candidate town of Krakow and the Slovak Republic. The Ambassador of Poland remarked it was important to use experience the town of Liptovský Mikuláš already has as it had already been a candidate for the Winter Olympics along with Poprad years ago. He said the competition and costs had been too high at that time and the candidacy couldn´t thus succeed. Further discussion between the town representatives and the Polish diplomats focused on the infrastructure and road and rail transport. The programme continued in the resort of Jasná, where the Polish diplomat had a look at mountain transport facilities that are supposed to be used during the Winter Olympics 2022. “We are optimistic and believe that the joint candidacy for the Winter Olympics 2022 will be successful. As for slopes, tracks and mountain transport facilities, I am really impressed. Not only due to the atmosphere and local climate, but mainly due to the overall condition in the resort, which gives us hope that we are well prepared in Jasná and the area when it comes to technical background and organisation,“ added Tomasz Chłoń.

“We are positive about the whole idea and support it using experience in the field of cooperation of the mayor of Liptovský Mikuláš or representatives of TMR as for the Olympic candidacy,“ said Tadeusz Frackowiak, the honorary consul.

The last visit planned for the Polish Ambassador was in the Museum of Janko Kráľ and an exhibition related to Jánošík, the famous bandit´s captain. “Our two nations, Poland and Slovakia are interconnected via history and culture. So we want to make a deal for the Winter Olympics 2022 – like Jánošík is common for both of us thanks to Agnieszka Holland, we would like Jasná, a resort popular with many tourists, and Mt. Chopok as one of the planned Olympic venues to be common as well. The Slovaks offer top quality slopes on Mt. Chopok as a common region of Slovakia and Poland,“ concluded Tomasz Chłoń.

The ski resort of Jasná, which holds a FIS certificate, is planned to be the main venue for alpine skiing disciplines as for the joint Olympic candidacy. The Slovak Ski Association has prepared several top events to be held on the slopes of Mt. Chopok, such as the World Junior Alpine Ski Championships on 26/2 – 6/3/2014 and Men´s European Cup in 2015.
