The most attractive and 1,240-metre-long piste between Lomnické sedlo (saddle) and Skalnaté Pleso can be opened much earlier than in previous years as there is already enough natural snow. The opening of the piste depends only on natural snow and on monitoring results of the Mountain Rescue Service, which measures the snow layer. On Thursday 29th December, explosive specialists of the Mountain Rescue Service were testing the snow layer in Lomnické sedlo. Two preventive explosions did not release avalanches and the avalanche specialists of the Service declared the snow cover in Lomnické sedlo to be stable enough. This means that the most demanding skiers can enjoy not only the black piste in the saddle but also the so called French mogul, i.e. freeride terrain in its south-western part which is one of the options how to ski down the famous saddle. To get to the sought-after skiing terrain of Lomnické sedlo from Skalnaté Pleso, skiers use a more than 1-kilometre-long 2-seater chairlift with a 400-metre vertical drop.

The piste of Lomnické sedlo was opened on the following days in previous years: 16/2/2016; 16/1/2015; 22/3/2014; 30/1/2013; 20/1/2012; 30/1/2011; 14/2/2010 and 2/1/2009.

Other ski pistes in Tatranská Lomnica offer 50 – 70 cm of snow, in Štrbské Pleso, there is 40 – 50 cm of snow and very good skiing conditions. After skiing in the High Tatras, skiers can enjoy various additional aprés-ski activities, such as the Tatra Dinner of Emotions at the intermediate station of Štart every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, or the Dinner under the Stars in Skalnaté Pleso, which begins on 7th January. Fresh Track is offered on the slope of Solisko in Štrbské Pleso at 7:00am, there are concerts in the Tatra Temple of Ice, night sledging between Hrebienok and Starý Smokovec and attractive aprés-ski parties on the slopes.
